Description

The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 Tremor 3 in Flat Dark Earth is item 185072. It is the bigger of the two Tremor 3 scopes we stock, and the one to choose if you need reach rather than a compact package.

The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 Tremor 3 against the 3.6-18×44

Both are 35 mm tube, first focal plane, non-illuminated Tremor 3 scopes with M5C3 elevation, capped windage and 0.1 MIL clicks. What separates them is size and reach.

This one runs 5x to 25x behind a 56 mm objective, weighs 30 ounces and measures 15.7 inches, with 35 MIL of elevation travel. Item 185067 is 3.6-18×44, 26 ounces, 12.1 inches, and 29 MIL of elevation.

So you are trading four ounces and three and a half inches for 7x more magnification, a bigger aperture and six more mils of dial. On a rifle built to be shot from a bipod that is an easy trade. On anything you carry, it is not.

The Tremor 3 reticle

Tremor 3 is a dense grid: wind dots, ranging brackets and a full holdover tree. It is built for engaging at speed across distance by holding rather than dialling, once you know the pattern well enough to read it without thinking.

That density is also its cost. If you are not going to learn it, it will clutter your view and a simpler reticle will serve you better. Being first focal plane, every reference is true at every magnification, which is the only way a grid reticle works.

There is no illumination and no battery in the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 Tremor 3. With a reticle this detailed, that is worth weighing: at 5x in failing light there is a lot of fine line to pick the aiming point out of.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, so it stays put in a drag bag. Clicks are 0.1 MIL on both axes, matching the reticle.

Total elevation travel is 35 MIL, or 120 MOA, at 10.5 MIL per revolution with a 30 MIL dial travel limit. Parallax is precision side focus with a 50 yard minimum. Windage moves 10 MIL per revolution.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible, though the turret is published as custom BDC dial compatible.

A windage figure that does not reconcile

The manufacturer publishes total windage travel for this scope as 80 MOA, 17 MIL and 175 cm at 100 metres, all in the same row. Those are not the same quantity. Seventeen mils is about 58 MOA, and 175 cm at 100 metres is 17.5 mils, so the MIL and centimetre figures agree with each other while the MOA figure does not.

The 3.6-18×44 sibling publishes 80 MOA / 23 MIL / 233 cm, which is internally consistent, so the 80 MOA on this page looks copied across. We print all three as published and would rely on the 17 MIL figure, which is what your turret is graduated in anyway.

Glass, size and honest notes

Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 20.4 feet at 5x and 4.2 feet at 25x, per 100 yards. Mounting space is 6.2 inches, split evenly front and rear, on a 6.2 inch objective section with a 2.5 inch bell.

The 35 mm main tube is the budget item nobody warns you about. It is not 30 mm and not 34. Rings and one-piece mounts exist in 35 mm but the market is narrower and the prices higher. Price the mount alongside the scope.

Flat Dark Earth appears only in the manufacturer model name and its image filenames; there is no finish specification row on the page. Leupold does not name Horus anywhere on it either, so neither do we. No coating list or light transmission figure is published.

Who this scope suits

Practical and field competitors who hold rather than dial, extended-range shooters working in mils, and anyone building a precision rifle in FDE who wants the full Tremor grid. The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 Tremor 3 is 100 percent waterproof and fogproof and guaranteed to perform for life.

Skip it if you have not learned the Tremor pattern, if you need illumination, or if the lighter 3.6-18×44 covers your distances.
