Description
The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR1-MOA is item 176448. Three products in this shop have been titled MARK 5HD 5-25X56. This is the one with the PR-1MOA reticle and MOA turrets, and the differences between the three are worth two minutes of your time.
Which Mark 5HD 5-25×56 is which
Item 176448, this scope, has an M1C3 elevation turret clicking in 1/4 MOA and the PR-1MOA reticle. Item 180291 is mechanically the same scope with the PR2-MOA reticle. Item 180222 is the odd one out: an M5C3 turret clicking in 0.1 MIL with a PR2-MIL reticle.
So between this and 180291 you are choosing a reticle pattern and nothing else. The turrets, the clicks, the travel, the weight and the body are identical. Between either of those and 180222 you are choosing a whole measurement system.
All three take 35 mm rings. That part, at least, is consistent across the trio.
The reticle and the focal plane
The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR1-MOA is a first focal plane scope, so the MOA subtensions stay true at every magnification. A 5 MOA hold is 5 MOA at 10x and at 25x, which is the only reason first focal plane glass exists.
It is not illuminated and there is no battery. At 5x the reticle looks fine, which is the standing trade with first focal plane optics: correct holds everywhere, less visible at the bottom of the range when the light goes.
Worth knowing: the manufacturer spells this reticle three different ways on its own page. The model name says PR1-MOA, the specification row says FFP PR-1MOA, and the reticle graphic file is named PR1-MOA. It is one reticle; only the hyphen moves.
Turrets, travel and parallax
Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, which keeps it from walking in a drag bag. Clicks are 1/4 MOA on both axes.
Total elevation travel is 120 MOA, which is 35 MIL or 349 cm at 100 metres, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit. Windage gives 60 MOA, or 17 MIL, at 15 MOA per turn.
Note the asymmetry: twice the elevation range you have windage. Mount the scope level and get the zero centred rather than spending windage travel correcting a crooked base. Parallax is side focus with a 50 yard minimum.
Glass and dimensions
Magnification runs 5x to 25x behind a 56 mm objective on a 35 mm tube. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 20.4 feet at 5x and 4.2 feet at 25x, per 100 yards.
The scope weighs 30 ounces and measures 15.7 inches, with 6.2 inches of mounting space split evenly 2 and 2. The objective section is 6.2 inches long and the bell 2.5 inches across.
Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR1-MOA
The 35 mm main tube is the first thing to budget for. It is not 30 mm and not 34. Rings and one-piece mounts in 35 mm exist but the market is narrower, they cost more, and you will not borrow a set at the range. Price the mount with the scope.
Thirty ounces and 15.7 inches is a serious optic. On a precision rifle shot from a bipod that is irrelevant; on anything you carry, it is not. Build the rifle around it rather than bolting it onto a mountain gun.
The manufacturer publishes no finish colour, no coating list and no light transmission figure for this model. Retail listings quote all three. We print what the manufacturer prints and nothing else.
Who this scope suits
Precision rifle shooters who work in minutes, long-range hunters who correct rather than guess, and anyone who prefers the PR-1MOA layout to the PR2. The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR1-MOA is 100 percent waterproof and fogproof and guaranteed to perform for life.
Skip it if you dial in MIL, if you need illumination for low light, or if 35 mm rings are not something you want to source.
